...gorgeous,
rippling keyboard runs with clusters of overtone gravity so thick they
seem to simply hang in the air and vibrate. For something so minimal
in its construction its ludicrously addictive, as Nuss’s mesmeric,
subtle time keeping somehow revisions Gualdi’s bubbling monochord
drone as a pulsing Ur-groove with an immense organic logic. The flip
is a beautiful rainbow tone piece for solo keyboard that combines
flashing pitch-shift arpeggios with timbres and modes salvaged from
1980s synth soundtracks and 1970s keyboard ritual. -
Volcanic Tongue
For such a slight approach, it’s
mystifying... keeping things at a low simmer and turning its gaze over
to doom/blues/stoner aspirations with very little effort. Not all that
obvious, but it holds up, Gualdi playing her instrument with the
improvisational breadth of a woodwind, transposed
to the clinical difficulty of electronics. -

Stellar OM Source Rise in Planes
Every
record has 2 sides. There is an inherent duality to the format.
Sometimes the sounds contained therein can expand beyond the average
experience of sides A and B. Rise in Planes is one such
record. It is both a
collage of songs and a monolithic mantra of collapsing notes. A
meditation on the realignment of atypical musical conjugations,
such as meter and melody, and a time specific experiment on the
effects that such change might have on the listener’s state
of mind both during and after the needle snakes its way through
the grooves. While there is a distinct difference
between the ascension of each side, there is also a permanence of
timbre, whether alone, folded upon itself or accompanied, that conjures
a sense of enchantment. One moment aggressive, the next soothing,
meditative throughout, while also flouting the misshapen identity
of Western dream music. Both the document of an electroacoustic
magician and an improvisatory illusionist, Rise in Planes subverts
futurism and past spontaneous composition in one slab of an etched
polymer compound carved out to vibrate the air around you into binary
thoughts.
